MICHAEL SHANNON was known for his artistry, ability to dance any role, and the amazing height of his leaps which elicited gasps from audiences and the attention of Bolshoi leaders, and ballet legend Madame Sophia Golovkina who awarded him a full scholarship, stipend, and housing at age-16, and the approval of the Ministries of Culture and Education with a visa to enter the USSR and become the first American graduate of the Moscow Choreographic Ballet Institute Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 1989, and featured Star of the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre under revered Artistic Director & Chief Choreographer Yuri Grigorovich.

Shannon was awarded a Silver Medal at the Paris International Ballet Competition in 1993 headed by Jury Chairman and Bolshoi Ballet legend Galina Ulanova. The Austrian Embassy honored him for winning the first medal of its kind in the history of dance in Austria. He was subsequently awarded a Silver Medal in the First Rudolph Nureyev Competition in Budapest Hungary in 1994.
